Discover deCrypt OPENING
Time: 10:00 to 16:00
The refurbished St Mary DeCrypt Church and Old School Classroom in Southgate Street, Gloucester will open to the public on Saturday 23rd March at 10:00.
Welcome to the Old Cryptians Club website. The Club was founded in 1901 (see history) to support the historic Crypt Grammar School which began life in the heart of Gloucester in 1539. The original schoolroom still exists today in St. Mary de Crypt in Southgate Street, Gloucester. The exciting project to restore the schoolroom and the church itself (Discover DeCrypt) has attracted a lot of support and a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £1.36M has just been announced (but please read LATEST NEWS on this page).
Throughout the year we organise a programme of events to attract ex-pupils of all ages. As well as our Reunion Dinner in March and other dinners, we arrange a golf day and hope to extend our Gloucester activities in the future. The London Old Cryptians’ Club is affiliated to the main Club and their principal event is a dinner in or near the City in mid-November. Another London event is the annual Cenotaph service at which Old Cryptians and current pupils parade and march from Whitehall to Horseguards.
A highlight of the school year is Founders’ Day, held in Gloucester Cathedral. Old Cryptians and their families are honoured guests at the very moving service. The day concludes with a supper at which the incoming President is installed. In recent years this has been held in the historic Parliament Rooms adjacent to the Cathedral.
The Club encourages members worldwide to maintain contact with one another through this site and through social media. We provide a members’ register which contains summary contact details allowing members to look up former School friends.
Club members are very proud of the education that they received at the Crypt School and thus many choose to contribute to the Bursary Fund. This has charitable status and helps to bind the present School and Old Cryptians.
We invite you to explore and enjoy our website. Check out the Events page. See the latest News. Peruse our Archive, including many photographs. If you are not already a member, do consider applying by contacting the Membership Secretary, Richard Briggs.

The magnificent Cathedral located in the heart of Gloucester where each summer a congregation of pupils, parents, School staff and Old Cryptians take part a in very special service (Founders' Day) to commemorate the founding of the Crypt School.
This little church, on Southgate Street not far from Gloucester Cross, has an attached schoolroom - the origin of the present Crypt School, founded by Alderman John Cooke and his wife Joan. The schoolroom is being renovated and the church itself is well worth a visit http://www.swithunandmary.org.uk/stmarydecrypt.html
