Bruce Mitchell (1951 – 54)

The funeral of Bruce Mitchell was held on 21st November 2017 at Gloucester Cathedral with some local Old Cryptians attending.  Bruce was a pupil at King’s School before going on to the Crypt in 1951.  He obtained a place at St Catherine’s Society (Oxford University) to read Maths but later changed to Modern History.  He became a teacher at The King’s School in 1959 and stayed until 1967.

He had a great love of music and was a Gloucester Cathedral chorister from 1942 to 1949, maintaining his association with the Cathedral for much of his life.

In Gloucester he served as a local councillor and subsequently took up positions with the National Association of Youth Clubs and GLOSCAT.  He also worked with numerous local and national charities.

George Hopkins (1941 – 48)

We have learned that George Hopkins died on 1 March 2017.  He had been in care and not well for a period of time.

At the Crypt he was House Captain of Brown House and the 1st XV Captain 1947/48.  He also played for 1st XI cricket and hockey teams.  He was gifted at tennis and played in seniors’ tournaments for Devon.

George was a late entrant to the teaching profession and a graduate of the Open University.

Howard Allen observed “In every way he exemplified the best in an Old Cryptian – all energy and compassion.”  Howard will be preparing a full obituary which will appear in The Cryptian later this year.

Lester Hunt (1949 – 57)

Lester Hunt, a distinguished Old Cryptian, passed away on 18th February 2017, aged 78.  He had successfully fought Parkinsons Disease for nearly 30 years but died in London from an unexpected infection whilst recovering from a fall.  A member of the 1stXV and Captain of Moore House, he went up to Sidney Sussex, Cambridge before joining the chemical industry and becoming a senior manager.  He was an avid sailor and spent much time in France.  He leaves his widow Sandra, two daughters and many grandchildren.

The memorial service for Lester will be at Highgate West Cemetery, London, N6 6PJ – access via Swain’s Lane which is one way south to north –   at 2pm on Thursday 9th March and afterwards at East Wing, the Old Hall, South Grove, Highgate. Sandra Hunt would be pleased to see Old Cryptians at the service but would appreciate an email to let her know –

Derek Howell (1949-54)

It is with great sadness that we record the death (at 79) of Derek Howell, a Life Member of the Club. Derek passed away on Christmas Morning in Gloucester Hospital.  For several years he served on the Old Cryptians Club Committee as Membership Secretary.  He was a stalwart of the Old Cryptians RFC and also had a great love of cricket.

The funeral will be on Monday, 16th January 2017 at 11:00 at Upton Parish Church followed by a cremation at Gloucester Crematorium at 12:00.  The family would like everyone to wear sports club ties.  Donations in lieu of flowers please to Wyatt House.  Everyone invited afterwards to the Old Cryptians RFC for the wake.

Malcom Haines (1945 – 51)

Malcolm Haines has recently passed away at the age of 84 (born 1932), after a long illness bravely borne. He was one of several brothers who attended the Crypt School and their sporting achievements were many.  Malcolm flourished on the rugby field where he played with distinction for a number of years at hooker, including many seven aside tournaments.  He played in the golden period 1950-60 and for several seasons captained the Old Cryptians RFC.  He was a mainstay in the OCRFC and his presence will be sorely missed.

(From Greg Barton) “Sad news indeed – Malcolm “Knocker” Haines was a true OCRFC stalwart. He was due to visit the Rugby club only a few weeks ago but was unable to make it. I am sure there will be many who will want to attend and say farewell to a true friend, as well as sharing many memories .”

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, 4th January 2017 at 11.00 am at the Gloucester Crematorium, Coney Hill Road.  After the Service everyone is invited by the family for refreshments at the Old Cryptians RFC, Memorial Ground, Tuffley Avenue, Gloucester.

Jack Lane (1964 – 84)

A distinguished master of the Crypt School, Jack Lane, died on 23rd April 2016 aged 90.  Jack was Head of Spanish under the Headmaster Stanley Ward, also teaching French and German at a time when Modern Languages were clearly thriving.  Jack studied at Corpus Christi, Cambridge following wartime service in the Far East and then taught at a school attached to the Sorbonne.  His first teaching post, at the age of 27, was at Launceston College in Cornwall.  He spent 7 years in the British Army School in Malaya before being recruited into the Crypt.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at Gloucester Crematorium on Friday, 13th May at 1100.  Coula and Jack’s family will be pleased to welcome any Old Cryptians who are able to attend.

Michael Clift (1939 – 46)

The recent death of Dr Michael Clift, who in latter years lived in Longlevens and Hatherley Grange Nursing Home, has been reported; his funeral has taken place.  Michael, a scholarship boy, attended the Crypt School between 1939 and 1946.  After Medical training he spent 13 years as the surgeon on Ocean liners and cruise ships. In 1970 he took up General Practice in Cheltenham and is remembered for doing a lot of good in the community.  His thirst for knowledge is also recalled  by his nephew.  He brings to mind countless yellow Teach Yourself books ranging from Hindi to Islam, Marquetry to Sewing  and Pitmans Shorthand.  With his profession and many interests Michael clearly led a very full life.

Gordon Hill (1949 – 55)

Gordon Hill sadly passed away on 20th February 2016.  The funeral will be held at the Crematorium, Coney Hill Hospital on Tuesday, 1st March at 1130, meeting afterwards at Painswick Golf club.  For many years Gordon was an enthusiastic Secretary to the Old Cryptians Club.  A full obituary will be published in the 2016 Cryptian magazine.

Tony Pugh 1935 – 42

The funeral for Tony Pugh was held on 26th January 2016 at the Northgate Methodist Chuch of St John. The following Old Cryptians were able to attend, some with their wives: Richard Browning, Eric Stephens, Howard Allen, Jill Harvey, Roger Davis and Mike Nuth.  A number of Masonic members  were also present as was Nikki Arthy representing St Mary De Crypt, with others from that community, as well as the Discover De Crypt group. The School was represented by the Headmaster and Sue Wales.

Tony was a long standing and enthusiastic member of the Old Cryptians Club and supported the Club’s activities into his 90th year.  He will be remembered for the solemn roll call at the Annual Dinner of Old Cryptians who died in the year.  He was often called upon to say grace at this and other dinners.  He simply loved his old School.

Tony was also Churchwarden of St. Mary de Crypt church for many years.

Alan Humphries 1940 – 1945

Sadly we have to record the death, on 4th December 2015, of Alan Humphries who attended the Crypt School from 1940 until 1945.  Alan was a President of the Old Cryptians Club in the period 1997-1998 and was also an enthusiastic member of the London Section.  The funeral will be held on Tuesday, 22nd December at Woking Crematorium.  Further details from Helen Humphries on 01438 565718.  Photo of Alan at an OCC Dinner:  Alan Humphries, President 1997-98
