Jack Lane (1964 – 84)

A distinguished master of the Crypt School, Jack Lane, died on 23rd April 2016 aged 90.  Jack was Head of Spanish under the Headmaster Stanley Ward, also teaching French and German at a time when Modern Languages were clearly thriving.  Jack studied at Corpus Christi, Cambridge following wartime service in the Far East and then taught at a school attached to the Sorbonne.  His first teaching post, at the age of 27, was at Launceston College in Cornwall.  He spent 7 years in the British Army School in Malaya before being recruited into the Crypt.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at Gloucester Crematorium on Friday, 13th May at 1100.  Coula and Jack’s family will be pleased to welcome any Old Cryptians who are able to attend.
